About Me
Janice V. Johnson Dowd, MSSW, LMSW
I am an individual in long-term recovery and a proud mother of four. My journey through hardship and renewal has led me to repair relationships once destroyed by addiction and build strong, loving relationships with my children - relationships that continue to exceed my hopes and dreams.
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with over 20 years of experience in family therapy and addiction recovery. My academic journey began at the University of Michigan, where I earned my B.A., and continued at the University of Texas, obtaining my M.S.S.W. My Master’s Thesis focused on “Alcoholism, PTSD, and the Vietnam Veteran.” In addition to my academic background, I have worked in Employee Assistance Programs and both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, gaining extensive experience in community outreach, public speaking, and clinical services.
I regularly speak at NASW and addiction conferences, delivering presentations and workshops on various mental health and recovery topics. I also share my insights through podcasts, promoting evidence-based, shame-free messages of healing and hope.
"I wrote this book, because I have lived the journey”
With over 20 years of active involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, ACoA, and Narcotics Anonymous, I am passionate about supporting others in their recovery journey. I frequently speak at meetings and lead workshops on topics such as relapse prevention, family recovery, and making amends.
I am also a published author, with two articles featured in Grapevine Magazine, and I run a blog titled “Finding Serenity in Sobriety.” My debut book, Rebuilding Relationships in Recovery (North Atlantic Books), is currently available at all major retailers.
