Raw Thoughts - I waited a long time to write the blog below because caregiving has been one of the most complicated experiences of my life. In 2008, when my father’s health failed, I became his primary voice and decision-maker. I wasn’t emotionally equipped for that role, and the weight of it fueled my abusive alcohol use. Years later, after I got sober, my mother’s health began to decline, and I showed up differently. I’ve lived both sides of caregiving: losing yourself in it, and tending to your mental health while doing it. If you’re carrying shame in this season, you’re not alone. I hope this reflection offers understanding and a bit of peace.
