About Me

Janice Johnson Dowd, LMSW

"I wrote this book, because I have lived this journey”

I am a recovering alcoholic, the mother of four children, who destroyed her relationships with her children and then fought her way back to healthy and happy bonds that continue to exceed my hopes and dreams. I am an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) who has worked in this industry for over 20 years, specializing in family therapy and addictions.

My education and research experience began with undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Michigan (B.A.) and the University of Texas (M.S.S.W.), where I worked as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant.  My Master’s Thesis was titled “Alcoholism, PTSD, and the Vietnam Veteran.” I have worked in Employee Assistance Programs and inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, including; the Audie Murphy VA Hospital, the Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Cottonwood de Austin, New Freedom, Human Affairs International, University of South Alabama Women’s and Children Hospital, Catholic Social Services, Catholic Schools of the Mobile Archdiocese, and more. In my work responsibilities, I have been responsible for community outreach, public speaking, and providing clinical services to patients.

In addition, I have 20-plus years of experience with AA. Alanon, ACoA, and NA.  I am very active in the 12-step community in Texas, Alabama, and the Gulf Coast Region. I am regularly asked to speak at meetings and lead topics such as Relapse, Family Recovery, Making Amends, etc., at workshops and conferences.  I have been a guest speaker on numerous Recovery, Sobriety, and Mental Health Blogs. I recently had an article published in the April 2023 issue of Grapevine Magazine. I currently have a Blog called “Finding Serenity in Sobriety,” and my debut book will be released Spring of 2025
