Name Change from Parenting In RecoveryI changed the name to clarify that my work encompasses more than just parenting; it’s about relationships of all kinds, including those with partners, family, friends, and co-workers.

Raw Thoughts - It's normal to have mixed feelings about Mother’s Day if you have or had a troubled relationship with your mother.My feelings toward my mom were harsh and critical for most of my life. My mom was a strict authoritarian in our household. I know she loved me and my siblings, yet I never heard her say it. She was a good mom in the textbook sense of the word. She cooked, cleaned, and supported us kids in all of our activities. But I had no real relationship with her because I lived in fear of violating her rules and disappointing her. It often felt like my efforts were never sufficient, and the only way to attain her approval was to achieve goals and bring pride and recognition to “the family.” It took three distinct changes in my life for me to soften my attitudes…. 1. I became a mother 2. I got sober 3. I did my inner child work. The short version of the rest of the story is that I now know she parented and demonstrated her love in the same manner as she had been raised. She had good intentions, wanted the best for her family, and did the best she could with what she had. Through my personal growth, I was able to come to terms with my mom and make peace before she died. Helpful tip from the book Rebuilding Relationships in RecoverySetting realistic expectations in relationships while embracing sobriety is so important! It helps rebuild trust step by step, eases the pressure for everyone involved, and opens up space for healing. Expectations can harm a relationship when they are unspoken, unrealistic, or inflexible. When we assume that others should think, feel, or behave a certain way without communicating those needs, we set them up to fail and ourselves up for disappointment. Ask before you assume, don’t mind read and give others the grace to be human. Open conversations create understanding, and in recovery, this is essential
